Why should I go GREEN?

(Edit this blog entry)

“I am thinking about going Green but I have to ask myself: Why go GREEN?
How does this help the environment and more importantly how will it help me in the long run?”

*        *        *

            I can immediately think of three great reasons to go green- for your health, for your peace of mind, and to preserve the world around you. This answer may seem very broad, but let me elaborate a bit on each aspect of going green.

               Every year since the industrial revolution, more and more chemicals have been introduced into our everyday lives. Some of these chemicals have had positive impacts, such as increasing food production and saving lives. However, humans can be quite shortsighted, so many chemicals have been overused and have resulted in unforeseen consequences on the health of the environment and the health of individuals. As bedding manufacturers since 1981, we are faced with a real conundrum: we want to offer a product that is beautiful, highly functional, and safe in every way. The average person spends one-third of their life asleep, so it is important to consider how healthy your bedding is. Traditional bedding contains additives and heavy metals which may cause off gassing- this means that while you are enjoying a nap or resting your weary bones, you are breathing in toxins, and that is definitely not green or healthy.

               Peace of mind can be achieved once you begin to appreciate the results of living green. You may notice that your garbage bag isn’t so heavy on trash day or your pantry isn’t full of plastic grocery bags. Using CFL light bulbs or other green technology will lower energy bills, giving you the greatest peace of mind at the end of every month when balancing that checkbook.

               Of course, the main reason for many people to live a green lifestyle is to preserve our world for future generations. No one likes to think that their children or grandchildren will be living on landfills or in a world where clean air and water are scarce. Only in the last few decades have we realized our negative impact on this planet, and how crucial it is to preserve the only home we have. It is a daunting task, but every step towards a green and natural lifestyle is a step in the right direction.

               As you can see, the three main reasons for going green are very much intertwined. Go GREEN so that you can live a healthier life and protect the world around you, which  results in feeling better about yourself and the world. Green living is also very community oriented- friendships are borne out of the exchange of ideas and entire communities can be reshaped by green living initiatives. This way, everyone wins and we are all building a better world!

               So after all this, you may be wondering why White Lotus Home products are considered “green”. The way we handcraft our products may have as great of an impact as the use of organic materials. Our “factory” is unique in that the only machines we use are regular sewing machines and desktop computers like the one I am using to write this. We focus on using local natural and organic fibers, the majority of our staff can walk or bike to work and we are a wind-power company. The only power we require is heat for the building and electricity for the lights and sewing machines. Everything is hand-crafted, so the only emissions we create are a little bit of sweat in the summertime! Durability is another aspect of green living that may not be so obvious. The longer a product lasts, the less it needs to be replaced over a lifetime. With proper care, a White Lotus mattress will easily last over 10 years, and we have customers who have been using the same mattress for 25 years. A long lasting mattress means more money in your pocket, less material in a landfill, and less hassle for you!

You should read the latest papers; in a nutshell you will read that the economy is going to keep getting worst for at least another year. More major job lost are projected until 2009, Starbucks is closing 600 US stores and car sales are at a 10 year low. All big indicators that things are not going to be better any time soon… My best advice for my family and friend is to: 1. Reduce your high interest debts (even if it means to taking some funds form your savings which are probably not earning much these days) 2. Establish a plan to get your credit scores over 700 3. Pick 5 cities where you would like to own real estate, monitor them 6 months and get ready to get some great deals on your dream homes etc…after 2010 4. Start following up on businesses that you would like to invest in, in the near future. Like White Lotus Home  5. How can your money grow faster? Invest where you would pay the least taxes and penalties but earn the highest interest. Use those savings for your next RE move and get rich or watch everyone else that got rich this way in 01-05, again. How many times did you say, I SHOULD HAVE INVESTED IN RE a few years ago….well here is another chance, this is the time act. 6. What if I do not have savings? GO GREEN and save a lot of money like White Lotus Home does. You can read on tips HERE! I also recommend reading “GO GREEN, Live Rich” which gives you 50 quick ways to do just that…Go GREEN while saving a LOT of GREEN! 7. Proof, I can only speak about my own experience here at White Lots Home and I have to say that are doing well and going GREEN had a lot to do with it! What if you don’t? If you do not do something like what I am suggesting above, in around 2012 you are going to say DAM!!! I should have saved in 2009, invested in 2010. In the past few years, we all have seen people flipped RE in months and made 100s of 1,000s of dollars. PS: I would love your feedback. If you want to get my "Get More GREEN" tips in the future, please let me know by emailing marlon@whitelotus.net Have a good holiday weekend! Marlon

If not for you, do it for our children.... Another thing to add is that going GREEN can actually help you offer our children a better future. You can also save and even make lots of money. There are many things you can do to help reduce your environmental foot print. Here are some of my favorites and they help children feel better about their future and how they can help. I like to point this out because it is our children who will suffer the consequences of our current lifestyles. After a recent presentation at my son's school, I was alarmed of how afraid these 10 year old children were after learning about the environment. One child told me that he feels like the world is going to end before he becomes and adult. So I am making it my business to keep on offering help and hopefully you will join us and help our children enjoy the nature we have. WATER SAVING TIPS: -shut the faucet while brushing your teeth and save about 2 gallons of water every every time. In a household of 4 that brush their teeth twice a day that is a total savings of 2,920 gallons a year. If 1 million Americans made this small change we would save 2,920,000,000 gallons of water a year. WOW! what are you waiting for :) -limit your showers to 5-7 minutes a day and take only one long shower a week and you can double and triple the numbers above... -make sure the dishwasher, cloth washer and dryer are full before using them. When possible hang your clothing on your porch, yard etc... and save energy, money and have longer lasting clothing. -buy products that last longer, this sometimes means investing more when purchasing but that is smart move. -White Lotus Home products are made to last long and they can be reused and upcycled. How? We make natural and organic pillows with zippers so that you can take out all the fibers and wash the casing and have a pillow for life. When you feel like making your pillow firmer, you can simple order extra natural and organic fibers to re-stuff your pillow. Why is this a water tip? Because it takes a lot of water to grow natural and organic fibers, the less we use the better for mother Earth. Similar GREEN product options are available with the rest of the White Lotus Home products call 732-828-111 for a FREE consultation. Take all the extra money you saved on the tips above and invest in slower flow shower heads, Eco-friendly light bulbs, Energy star appliances, wind power, solar panel, GREEN companies etc...and continue to reduce your FOOTPRINT. Good luck and thank you sooooo much for helping us save the Earth and offering our children a peace of mind.
