Pillow Question

A good question from a White Lotus customer!

*        *        *

After watching the "Story of Stuff" my husband and I have become very concerned about the fact that pillows are treated with a flame retardant chemical /neurotoxin. My question for you is this: Are your pillows free of such chemicals?

Thank you.

Karen

Hi Karen,

We specialize in pillows and bedding without added chemicals. All of our pillows are handcrafted with an outer shell made from 100% certified organic cotton sateen fabric that has not been treated with flame retardants. Our organic cotton pillows are filled with the same- untreated, certified organic cotton. Our kapok pillows are filled with natural, untreated kapok (a plant fiber similar to down) and out wool pillows are filled with natural wool that has only been washed in a mild detergent, again with no added chemicals. These pillows are available in a variety of sizes and can be made softer or firmer to suit your comfort level. Please see our full line of pillows. Please let me know if you have any further questions and thanks for your interest in White Lotus Home!

Hi Trish- I'm not sure why the scent seems to have become more apparent over time, as it is typically the case that the scent of our natural fibers would dissipate over time, i.e. the scent would be less than when it was first received. It sounds to me as though this is the result of something that happened after the fact. Perhaps in your home it has come into contact with something that has given it this smell, but there is no way that it would have come into contact with something like paint remover in our facility. Our fibers are extremely natural and have not been treated with bleaches, dyes, or fungicides. For the Organic Cotton, it does tend to have scent to it at first, but this is just the natural botanical scent of the cotton. The Organic Cotton actually tends to have a stronger scent to it than the green cotton, as our Organic Cotton does contain seeds, and when it is garneted into layers by our cotton providers, the seeds are crushed in the process. Crushing the seeds causes the release of a natural oil that is contained in the seed of the cotton itself. This is what causes the scent of the cotton that we carry at White Lotus Home. I hope that this information helps! Let us know if there's something more we can do for you. You can always call, or write to us at sales@whitelotus.net. Thank you!

I have a Moses basket with a mattress made by White Lotus. Recently it has begun to smell like paint remover. The smell even rubs onto my baby's head. What is this and is there anything that can be done about it?
